I think it’s both. Can’t be just popular and totally incompetent. Can’t be just competent and totally unlikable. See examples every day and life isn’t always fair, but it does even out eventually.
Thanks. Seems like you agree with my basic point of view. I think competency is still more important as long as we include the popularity factor. We are talking in the big picture and not about one industry or five, of course. I have heard people say we are no longer a meritocracy or never was. I disagree but understand why people say that. People tend to call, in my opinion, any History view we do not like "revisionist history." That is not the main topic, but that is where my mind went. All History is revisionist History, I would say. Revising is part of it.
Thanks. These are great points you bring up. I try to look at the widest possible scope realizing what I am saying is what I see that explains in the large sense but not in every single episode. Cronyism is very influential, and I file that under popularity. Anyone can answer the questions however they want. I think America is still a meritocracy because it still pays people up the ladder to have capable people below them. It makes everyone look better and helps the up-ladder folks do their jobs better. I am so glad you responded. I knew you would have interest in this topic.

The familiar keeps winning because it is familiar. - so true. The premise on which both McDonalds and Marvel movies are based.
Yes, and so much of the world. I am glad you read and posted your feelings. Thanks.
Do we live in a meritocracy? Yes and No.
Yes, if you show you can do a job, you can get that job, and many people are promoted on merit.
No, because many obviously qualified people never get that job due to luck or poor timing, and many people are promoted on cronyism.
So we live in a world where you should be able to do the work and be rewarded, for too many of us it’s a who-you-know world instead.
